What is swimmer's ear?

Swimmer’s ear, medically known as otitis externa, is an infection that affects the ear canal. Symptoms can include itching, soreness, and mild pain in the ear. The condition often results from water being trapped in the ear canal, providing a conducive environment for bacteria or fungi to thrive

Our solution for swimmer's ear At Medcare Health Clinic

We provide Flumetasone/Clioquinol ear drops as a targeted treatment for individuals who have previously been diagnosed with swimmer’s ear and are familiar with the symptoms. Please note that if you haven’t been previously diagnosed with swimmer’s ear or are experiencing severe pain, pus, or fluid leakage from the ear, our treatment may not be suitable for you. In such cases, we strongly advise you to consult with a healthcare professional in person.

Understanding flumetasone/clioquinol ear drops

Flumetasone is a topical steroid that works effectively to alleviate inflammation in the ear canal. On the other hand, Clioquinol acts as both an antibacterial and antifungal agent, eradicating the pathogens responsible for the infection.

Possible side effects

Some individuals might experience a burning sensation, itching in the ear, skin rash, or temporary blurred vision. Please be aware that the ear drops may lead to hair discoloration if they come into contact with your hair and can also stain clothes or bed linen. Consult the Patient Information Leaflet provided with the medicine for a comprehensive list of potential side effects and instructions on proper usage.

Instructions for use

use If prescribed, apply two to three drops of the medicine directly into the ear canal of the infected ear, twice daily. It is recommended to lie on the side opposite the infected ear to allow the drops to penetrate deeply into the canal. Continue this treatment for up to seven days. If symptoms persist after seven days, consult with your general practitioner.

Important safety information

Please ensure that you disclose all other medications you are taking, whether they are prescription-based or over-the-counter, as well as any pre-existing health conditions. This information is crucial for Medcare Health Clinic to determine the suitability of the swimmer’s ear treatment for your individual needs.

Alternatives and prevention

If you opt against treatment, over-the-counter pain relievers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can be used to mitigate discomfort, pain, and inflammation associated with swimmer’s ear.
Preventative measures include the use of earplugs while swimming, thoroughly drying the ears post-swimming, bathing, or hair washing, and restricting the use of cotton buds to visible parts of the ear, avoiding insertion into the ear canal.
