What are Piriton Allergy Tablets?
Piriton, containing chlorphenamine maleate, is a widely used antihistamine to treat allergic reactions and itching. It is available over the counter and online. Piriton comes in 4mg tablets and 2mg/5ml syrup. The generic version is also available for those looking for a more cost-effective option.
How Piriton Allergy Tablets Work
Piriton allergy tablets counteract the body’s response to allergens by blocking histamine, which causes symptoms like watery/itchy eyes, sneezing, runny/blocked nose, and skin reactions.
Piriton Hay Fever Tablets
Piriton 4mg Tablets are effective for relieving hay fever symptoms, such as:
- Nasal congestion and runny nose
- Itchy, watery, and red eyes
- Sneezing
- Itchy nose, roof of mouth, or throat
These tablets provide quick relief, especially during high pollen seasons.
Uses for Piriton 4mg Tablets
Besides treating hay fever, Piriton 4mg Tablets are also effective for relieving itching from chickenpox. One of the side effects, drowsiness, can be beneficial for those suffering from nighttime itching, particularly young children.
Piriton can also help with travel sickness due to its effectiveness against motion sickness.
Piriton Tablets for Sleeping
While Piriton can cause drowsiness and help with sleep occasionally, it is not recommended for long-term treatment of insomnia. Continuous use can lead to tolerance, reducing its effectiveness over time. For persistent sleep problems, consult your doctor for alternative treatments.
Piriton for Babies
Piriton syrup is suitable for children aged one and above, while the 4mg tablets are for those aged six and above. It is not licensed for babies under one year unless prescribed by a doctor.
Piriton for Dogs
Piriton can be used for dogs but only under veterinary guidance with a prescription from your Vet. It is often prescribed by vets to treat allergy symptoms in dogs, offering a safe and long-term treatment option for chronic allergies.
Piriton Chlorphenamine Maleate
Piriton Chlorphenamine Maleate is a sedating antihistamine used to treat and prevent allergy symptoms. It is a synthetic alkylamine derivative that acts as a competitive histamine H1 receptor antagonist, with anticholinergic and mild sedative effects.
Piriton Side Effects
Common side effects of Piriton include drowsiness, which can be beneficial for nighttime symptoms. Other possible side effects are:
- Excitability in children
- Difficulty concentrating, tiredness, dizziness, headache, or blurred vision
- Low blood pressure
