Description
Mirvaso is a prescription-only topical gel for adults with rosacea who want visible, temporary reduction of persistent facial redness (erythema). It contains brimonidine, an alpha agonist that narrows small facial blood vessels to reduce excess blood flow and redness. Mirvaso is applied once daily as a thin layer across the face, with a maximum daily dose of 1 gram (about 5 pea-sized amounts).

What Mirvaso treats (and what it does not)
- Treats the redness (erythema) of rosacea by narrowing small blood vessels in the facial skin.
- Does not treat rosacea bumps/spots directly. If you also have inflammatory lesions, a prescriber may advise another rosacea treatment alongside Mirvaso.
- Mirvaso can be used with other rosacea skin medicines and cosmetics, but only after Mirvaso has dried (do not apply other products immediately before Mirvaso).
How Mirvaso works
Rosacea redness is linked to increased blood flow in superficial facial blood vessels. Brimonidine is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist. When applied to the skin, it causes these vessels to constrict, reducing blood flow and improving the appearance of facial redness.
How to use Mirvaso (dosage and application)
- Clean the face gently and let the skin dry fully.
- Start with a small amount during week 1 (less than the maximum dose).
- Apply a very thin, even layer across the whole face: forehead, chin, nose, and both cheeks.
- Use up to five pea-sized amounts in total (one for each area). Do not exceed 1 g in 24 hours.
- Avoid eyes, eyelids, lips, mouth, and the inside of the nose. Rinse with plenty of water if contact occurs.
- Wash hands immediately after applying.
- If you use other skincare, cosmetics, or rosacea medicines, apply them only after Mirvaso has dried.
Mirvaso is applied once daily only. Do not apply more than once per day.
How quickly does Mirvaso work and how long does it last?
Many people notice reduced redness within about 30 minutes, although the onset can range from around 30 minutes to several hours. The effect gradually diminishes hours after application and may last up to 12 hours depending on individual response.
Important safety note: worsening redness (exacerbation or rebound)
Worsening of rosacea symptoms is very common with Mirvaso. In clinical studies, symptom exacerbation occurred in about 16% of patients. Some people experience redness or flushing returning worse than baseline, most often within the first 2 weeks.
- Start low and go slow: begin with less than the maximum dose for at least 1 week and increase gradually based on tolerability.
- Do not exceed the maximum daily dose (1 g total; about 5 pea-sized amounts).
- Stop Mirvaso and seek medical advice if you develop worsening redness, flushing, or burning.
- If restarting after a worsening episode, test on a small facial area on a day you can stay at home.

- The patient is a child under 2 years (serious systemic safety risk). Mirvaso should not be used under 18 years.
Speak to a prescriber before use if you have:
- Heart or circulation problems, low blood pressure (especially on standing), or reduced blood flow to hands/feet.
- Depression, reduced blood flow to the brain or heart, or Sjogren’s syndrome.
- Irritated facial skin, open wounds, or you recently had (or plan) laser procedures on facial skin.
