Frequently Asked Questions
What is Daktarin Oral Gel 15g used for?
Daktarin Oral Gel 15g is used to treat fungal infections in the mouth, throat and stomach, most commonly oral thrush. It contains miconazole, an antifungal medicine that helps clear the infection and improve symptoms such as soreness, white patches and discomfort.
Who can use Daktarin Oral Gel 15g?
Daktarin Oral Gel can be used by adults and children over 4 months. It must not be used in infants under 4 months because of the risk of choking. Extra care is needed when giving it to young children – the dose should always be divided into small portions placed at the front of the mouth.
How long does Daktarin Oral Gel take to work?
Some people notice improvement in soreness and irritation within a few days, but the fungal infection may take longer to fully clear. It is important to continue using the gel for at least 7 days after symptoms have disappeared, or as advised by your doctor, to help prevent the infection from returning.
Can I use Daktarin Oral Gel if I’m on other medicines?
Miconazole can interact with several medicines, especially blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin and certain heart, allergy and cholesterol treatments. Always tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you are taking before using Daktarin Oral Gel. They can check for interactions and adjust doses if necessary.
Can I use Daktarin Oral Gel if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?
If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are breastfeeding, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Daktarin Oral Gel. Do not apply the gel directly to the nipple to treat your baby, as this can pose a choking risk and increase exposure to the medicine.
How can I help prevent oral thrush coming back?
Good mouth care can help reduce the chance of thrush returning:
-
Brush teeth and gums gently twice daily
-
Clean dentures thoroughly and remove them at night
-
Rinse the mouth after inhaled corticosteroid use (if applicable)
-
Attend regular dental checks, especially if you have diabetes, wear dentures or take long-term medicines that can affect immunity
For more preventive advice and when to see a doctor, you can refer to the NHS oral thrush information.
Is Daktarin Oral Gel sugar-free?
Yes. Daktarin Sugar Free 2% Oral Gel 15g is formulated without sugar, which is useful where sugar intake needs to be limited (for example, some people with diabetes or dental concerns).
